Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Crime reporting is a critical component of maintaining public safety, enabling law enforcement agencies to respond promptly and effectively. Social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Twitter, and Facebook have transformed crime reporting by providing real-time communication channels between the public and security agencies. In Karaye Local Government Area, Kano State, where traditional reporting methods are often slow and inaccessible, social media offers an alternative that can enhance transparency, accountability, and community engagement. Studies have shown that social media can bridge the gap between citizens and law enforcement, fostering trust and encouraging proactive crime reporting (Bello & Abdullahi, 2024). This study examines the effects of social media on crime reporting in Karaye, focusing on its benefits, challenges, and overall impact on community safety.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the potential of social media to improve crime reporting, its adoption in Karaye is hindered by factors such as digital illiteracy, fear of victimization, and misinformation. These issues reduce the effectiveness of social media as a tool for crime prevention and resolution. This study explores the impact of social media on crime reporting in Karaye, addressing these challenges and identifying strategies for improvement.
